Microbial Safety Cabinet (MSC), also known as Biosafety Cabinet (BSC), is designed to provide protection for personnel, products, and the environment when handling biological agents and hazardous substances. They are the most commonly used BSC types in laboratories and medical institutions. It has functions such as personnel protection, product protection, and environmental protection.

MSCs use vertical laminar flow (unidirectional airflow) and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to achieve these protections. The airflow is divided into two streams:

Inflow: Air is drawn into the cabinet through the front grille, forming an air curtain to prevent pollutants from escaping into the laboratory.

Downward flow: HEPA filtered air flows downwards from the top of the cabinet, providing a sterile environment for the workbench. Then, the air is separated; Part of it is recycled through a HEPA filter, while the rest is discharged through another HEPA filter to ensure that no harmful particles are released into the environment.

Application scenarios: Microbial research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical and diagnostic laboratories, healthcare institutions, etc.

MSCs are further classified into different types based on their structure, airflow pattern, and exhaust system (e.g. A1, A2, B1, B2 types). The selection of cabinet type depends on the specific requirements of the work being performed, including the type of reagents being processed and the required sealing level.
